Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth
This executive order (14277) establishes a national strategy to promote artificial intelligence (AI) literacy and proficiency among K–12 students and educators. It creates a White House Task Force on AI Education, including the Secretary of Education and the Secretary of Labor, to coordinate federal efforts, develop public-private partnerships, and identify federal discretionary and formula grants to help youth develop AI skills and improve education outcomes using AI. The order also directs federal agencies to prioritize AI in curriculum development, professional development for teachers, and workforce training programs.
What to watch: Federal engagement with states and local educational agencies (LEAs) under this order is voluntary and primarily occurs through collaborative partnerships and discretionary or formula grants. As federal agencies implement this order, they should use caution when issuing new guidance or priorities for existing formula grant programs to ensure there is sufficient flexibility for state and local partners to shape these programs to fit their unique needs. Agencies must also take care that federal funding is not shifted away from mandated requirements, thereby creating unfunded mandates or undermining essential services supported by existing formula grants.
