Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities

This order (14242) directs the Secretary of Education to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities.” In this regard it is transparently pro-federalism, but because the bulk of programs administered by the Department of Education are authorized by Congressional statute—as is the existence of the agency itself—it remains to be seen how much practical long-term effect this order will have on federal power to influence state and local education practices.
